(Note: Before reading, please understand that I am not attacking the Orthodox Church. In general, they have an amazing understanding of the majesty of God, a deep appreciation for artwork and beauty in worship, a respect for tradition, a love of history, and many more admirable qualities. However, many who call themselves “Orthodox” are desperately in the dark.)
The population of Bucureşti is about two million, and about 96-98% are Orthodox
Christians. Why do they need the gospel?
Reason #2 – Religion Doesn’t Do A Thing For Me…
Almost everyone in Bucureşti has heard about Jesus, but the church
in general has made little impact on the character of individuals or of the nation. Lust is just one area, but it’s the most easily noticed.
Sex shops and erotic massage parlors are more common here than gas stations, and they don’t hide anything in their ads. To use my friend Gabi’s words, “high school girls dress like prostitutes.” Probably related, many of the men whom we’ve met, whether in the church or on the street, admitted to having issues with porn. Further, although prostitution is illegal, it is certainly not unusual, and webcam
businesses are exploding. (Just the other day, in fact, I came across an ad taped to a university wall looking to hire more girls for a new webcam business.)
In short, if 98% are Christian, they still need to meet the One who makes dead hearts come alive. They’ve heard about God, practiced religion, even occasionally gone to church, but they have yet to meet the Life-Changer himself: Jesus.
